About Our Directors

Marj Friedmeyer, Director

Coming from a family of singers and musicians, music soon became an important part of Marj’s life. As she was growing up, dueting with her mom was one of Marj's favorite things to do. Later Marj sang in a sextet, did plenty of solo work, and sang in choirs. Piano and voice lessons also attributed to her musical life.

In 1979, Marj joined Sweet Adelines International. She is a charter member of the Heart of Missouri Chorus and became assistant director and joined her first quartet within her first year of membership. In 1985, she became a Co-Director and received the Novice Director Award at regional competition. The following year, as Director of the Heart of Missouri Chorus, Marj began her work of love in bringing the chorus to many small chorus awards. One of her most thrilling experiences is to see the chorus win the "Most Improved" award at regional competition. It is confirmation that during the journey, all the hard work has paid off. 2002 and 2011 were years for that award! To top off the Most Improved award in 2011, the chorus scored enough points to be invited to Harmony Classic. Only the top 5 scoring small choruses in the world of Sweet Adelines are invited to this. So the chorus is looking forward to competing as Region 5 Division A Champions in the 2012 International Harmony Classic being held in Denver on Oct. 30.

Other musical things Marj enjoys are singing with Earl, her barbershop husband, singing tenor with New Design Quartet, directing her church choir, teaching barbershop to young men and women in high school music, and attending as many educational events, offered by Sweet Adelines, as she can. Marj also acted as Director of Musical Activities for Midwest Gateway - Region 5, for three years.

Twilla Duvall, Assistant Director

Twilla joined the Hearts more than twenty five years ago, and has served as assistant director since first joining. She has been the lead section leader for many years and has a passion for sharing her knowledge of barbershop music with others. Twilla has served in just about very musical and administrative role known to the Hearts. She is the current Team Coordinator for Midwest Gateway Region 5.

Youngsters holds a special place in Twilla’s heart as she has directed the Youth Choir at church for many years. Their Christmas pageant includes scripting, costumes, and lots of singing. Twilla also serves at an organist for her church and accompanies the Adult Choir. Professionally, she oversees the websites and digital venues for Central Bancompany. Twilla and her husband, Sonny enjoys outdoor activities and sending time with their grandchildren.

Lisa Woolridge, Assistant Director and Choreographer

Lisa Woolridge went to her first Sweet Adeline rehearsal in 1965 at the age of 5 with an older sister Nancy Kurth who has been her director in two different choruses. Of course, that was a long time ago...although it seems just like yesterday. Lisa danced in Sweet Adeline shows as a kid and competed for the first time in 1978 when she was 18.

Lisa is a Certified Director and has been Assistant Director and Choreographer for the Heart of Missouri Chorus since 1987. She also creates choreography for other Sweet Adeline Choruses in Regions 5 and 7. Lisa has served as: Young Singers Foundation Liaison for International; Regional Team Membership Chair; President of The Heart of Missouri Chorus; Show Chair; Marketing Chair; Ways & Means Chair; Music Team; Section Leader; Script Team and sang in 3 registered quartets.

Married and the mother of grown twin boys, Lisa’s spare time is spent playing tennis, running, gardening and playing with her pack of animals. In her professional life Lisa is a Realtor at House of Broker’s Realty and has been helping people buy and sell their homes since 1992. “The Hearts” love the enthusiasm Lisa brings to the chorus, she is our biggest fan!
